Spring–Summer 2023 Fashion Trends
This spring and summer’s fashion will be colourful, relaxed, and with a touch of hippie flair. We could even call it dopamine dressing. Once again, every woman will be able to find clothes and colours that complement her natural features.
Colours of the Season
According to Pantone, Magenta is the colour of the year. Silver will take precedence over gold, while lavender, light blue, and soft shades of pink, yellow, and green will bring a calming effect. Yellow will appear more often, in lighter tones than last season. It symbolises joy, hope, and activity. It’s a great way to brighten up a strict business suit—though as a bold colour, it can feel intrusive, and paired with black it signals caution or danger. To soften it, combine it with white or grey; to warm it, use brown; to give it a nautical feel, pair it with blue.
Key Fashion Elements
Cargo-style patch pockets will appear not only on trousers but also on blouses and dresses. Designers have noted our love for dresses—not just because they save us the trouble of coordinating two pieces, but also because they enhance femininity. Expect to see delicate lace slip dresses and floral prints, which are always a good investment. A floral dress is one of the best summer garments, suitable for countless occasions—and with sleeves, it can even work for the office.
Lingerie-inspired looks are mainly a trend for younger women. Corsets (best for those without a tummy) and dresses reminiscent of romantic nightgowns will be popular, though they’re hardly ideal for the workplace.
Shapes and Details
This season celebrates asymmetry and draping, especially in feminine dresses. Skirt shapes are once again inspired by crinolines—full, gathered, and either short or mid-calf. Alongside vintage florals, expect plaid patterns, asymmetric hemlines, and unfinished seams.
Fringe is a trend that will continue into the next season—seen on handbags, dresses, blazers, and shoes. Fringe adds movement, freshness, and playfulness to garments and accessories; as a detail on eveningwear, it feels bohemian, glamorous, and dramatic.
Denim Everywhere
Denim will reign supreme—on coats, skirts, blouses—printed, dyed, or studded. In the business world, where smart casual is the standard, jeans are acceptable if they are evenly dyed, undamaged, and preferably dark for a more formal impression.
Lace and Ruffles
Lace details are perfect for spring/summer styling. Lace can be classic and understated, creative when laser-cut, or romantic with appliqué flowers dancing across the fabric.
Ruffles—both large and small—were everywhere on the runways, signalling a return to glamour in both day and evening wear. This trend, seen in recent seasons from voluminous skirts to oversized sleeves, seems to reflect a desire to be more present and noticeable. In other words: it’s time to let your style shine. Similarly, bows were bold and oversized on the catwalk, but scaled down for ready-to-wear collections.
Prints and Patterns
Stripes appear every season, but perhaps more prominently this year—thicker and with stronger contrast.
The Statement Suit
Suits have been a staple for several seasons, but this year they must stand out—oversized, in interesting colours, with gold buttons. Nearly every brand offers one with a floral print or retro pattern, most often double-breasted with a wide, pointed lapel. Some have broad shoulders, and if made from softer fabric, can be cinched with a belt.
Final Thought
Enjoy a spring filled with flowers, colour, and joy—because this season, fashion is all about making you feel vibrant and alive.
