Wool Care: How to Keep Wool, Cashmere, and Other Delicate Fabrics Beautiful for Years

Caring for wool, cashmere, and other delicate natural fibers is essential to preserving their softness, shape, and longevity. These fabrics are not only a pleasure to wear, they’re also kinder to the planet—wool can decompose in one to five years, whereas polyester may take anywhere from 20 to over 200 years to break down. Here are some practical tips to keep your favorite pieces looking and feeling luxurious for as long as possible.

1. Washing Wool and Cashmere

  • Hand wash whenever possible: The safest method is to gently wash wool or cashmere in lukewarm water (around 30°C / 86°F) using a mild wool detergent or a pH-neutral shampoo.

  • Machine washing: If you choose to use a washing machine, select the wool or delicate cycle, and reduce the spin speed. Place the garment in a mesh laundry bag for added protection.

  • Avoid vigorous rubbing: Simply swirl the garment gently—rubbing can damage the fibers and cause felting.

2. Drying Wool and Cashmere

  • Skip the wringing: After washing, press out excess water gently without twisting the fabric. Lay the item between two dry towels and roll it up to absorb moisture.

  • Dry flat: Always lay wool and cashmere flat on a clean, dry towel to dry, reshaping it as needed. Never hang—gravity will stretch the fibers out of shape.

3. Storing Wool and Cashmere

  • Fold, don’t hang: Store folded in drawers or on shelves to avoid stretching.

  • Protect from moths: Use natural repellents like lavender sachets or cedarwood blocks—moths are drawn to natural fibers, so prevention is key.

4. Ironing and Refreshing

  • Low heat and steam: If ironing is necessary, use a low-temperature setting with steam.

  • Use a damp cloth: Place a thin, clean cotton cloth—slightly damp—between the iron and the fabric to prevent scorching. A cotton muslin cloth (or even a baby muslin square) works perfectly.
