Most aromatic ingredients in modern perfumery are derived from plants, though some are artificially synthesised or sourced from animal secretions. For instance, the musk deer (Moschus moschiferus<\/em>) secretes musk from a special gland located between its navel and genitalia, an ingredient historically used in perfumes. Today, natural musk is banned, and only synthetic white musk is used. Cheaper fragrances rely on synthetic essences, whereas high-quality perfumes contain natural extracts\u2014only those scents that cannot be obtained naturally or are legally restricted are artificially reproduced.<\/p>\n
